Help for stress and burnout

Stress is a normal part of life and, in small amounts, can even be motivating. But when stress becomes chronic or overwhelming, it can take a serious toll on your mind, body, and relationships. At Inner Northern Psychology, we support clients in recognising the signs of stress, understanding its impact, and developing healthier ways to cope.

How Stress Can Affect You

Stress can show up in different ways for different people. Common effects include:

  • Physical: headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, digestive issues, or lowered immunity

  • Emotional: irritability, increased anxiety, mood swings, or feeling overwhelmed

  • Cognitive: difficulty concentrating, memory problems, or impaired decision-making

  • Behavioural: changes in sleep or appetite, increased use of alcohol or substances, or withdrawal from social life

  • Interpersonal: strained relationships, communication difficulties, or feeling less able to connect with others

When stress is ongoing, it can also lead to burnout—a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion that makes it hard to function day to day.

How We Can Help

There’s no single way to manage stress—different approaches suit different people. At Inner Northern Psychology, our psychologists draw on both directive and non-directive styles of therapy:

  • In directive therapy, your psychologist will take a more active role, offering practical tools, strategies, and structured exercises to help you manage symptoms and build resilience.

  • In non-directive therapy, you set the pace, and your psychologist provides space for you to explore feelings, reflect, and understand the deeper causes of your stress.

Often, a blend of both works best—offering structure and skills while also creating room for reflection and self-understanding.

We use evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), Psychodynamic Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy, tailoring treatment to your needs and goals.
