Understanding the different types of psychologists in Australia
Helping you navigate your options with confidence
All psychologists practising in Australia are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), ensuring they meet strict standards for education, training, and ethical practice.
When seeking psychological support, it’s very common to feel unsure about the different types of psychologists and what their titles mean. Terms like general psychologist, clinical psychologist, counselling psychologist, registrar, and provisional psychologist can be confusing at first glance.
Below is a clear guide to help you understand the differences, so you can make a more informed decision about your care. These are the types of psychologists within our team at Inner Northern Psychology—there are also many other areas of psychology practised in different settings.
1. Clinical Psychologists
A clinical psychologist has completed postgraduate training, typically a Master’s or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, along with further supervised clinical experience. The pathway to endorsement in this area is extensive, usually involving 6–7 years of full-time study followed by additional supervised practice.
They typically:
Specialise in the assessment and treatment of a broad range of difficulties, from mild to complex
Have advanced training in psychological assessment and diagnosis
Work with concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, personality difficulties, and chronic mental health conditions
Clinical psychologists work across a variety of settings, including hospitals, specialist services, and private practice. Due to their additional qualifications, Medicare rebates for clinical psychologists are higher than for general psychologists.
At Inner Northern Psychology, Jess, Kirk, and Sarah are endorsed Clinical Psychologists.
2. Counselling Psychologists
A counselling psychologist has completed postgraduate training in counselling psychology and holds an area of practice endorsement with AHPRA.
They typically:
Focus on helping people navigate life challenges, relationships, and emotional difficulties
Work with concerns such as anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, and identity or life direction
Emphasise a collaborative, relational, and strengths-based approach
Counselling psychologists are trained in evidence-based therapies and often place a strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, meaning-making, and supporting clients through transitions and personal growth. Lis is an Endorsed Counselling Psychologist at INP.
3. Psychologist Registrars
A registrar psychologist is a fully registered psychologist who is completing a structured program of supervised practice to gain an area of practice endorsement (such as clinical or counselling psychology).
Key points:
They already meet all requirements for general registration
They are undertaking additional supervised experience in a specific area
They work closely with a board-approved supervisor
Registrars provide high-quality care while continuing to develop advanced skills. Many clients find this a strong option, as registrars are up to date with current approaches and receive regular supervision and support. Phoebe and Georgina are both Clinical Psychology Registrars at INP.
4. Provisional Psychologists
A provisional psychologist is in the final stage of training and completing supervised practice before becoming fully registered.
They:
Have completed extensive academic training in psychology
Work under close supervision by a registered psychologist
May be involved in therapy, assessment, or structured support roles
While provisional psychologists do not practise independently, they can offer valuable support as part of a supervised team.
It’s important to note that sessions with provisional psychologists are not eligible for Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan. However, fees are typically lower, which can make psychological support more accessible.
At Inner Northern Psychology, Noemi is our warm and highly capable Provisional Psychologist. You are welcome to book an initial conversation with her to discuss your needs. She can then help guide you towards the most appropriate member of the team, if needed.

Who Might Be the Best Fit for You?
While there is overlap across all psychologists, the following can be a helpful starting point:
You might consider a clinical psychologist if:
You’re dealing with more complex or long-standing difficulties
You’ve had therapy before and are looking for a deeper or more specialised approach
You would benefit from a higher Medicare rebate
You might consider a counselling psychologist if:
You want support with life transitions, relationships, or personal growth
You’re looking for a collaborative, reflective therapeutic space
You value a strong focus on the therapeutic relationship
You might consider a registrar psychologist if:
You’re looking for high-quality care with a slightly lower fee
You’re comfortable working with someone who is developing advanced expertise under supervision
You value clinicians who are closely supported and up to date with current approaches
You might consider a provisional psychologist if:
You’re seeking more affordable support
Your needs are suited to a structured, supported therapy environment
You’re comfortable working within a supervised care model
